May Foodie Pen Pal REVEAL

May was my first month participating in the "Foodie Pen Pal" Program, and I must say, it was awesome! I am excited to participate again in June.

Here is a bit of information on Foodie Pen Pals:
  • On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions. 
  • You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!   
  • The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!  
  • You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)

My box came from a lovely soul all the way over in Quebec. Françoise was kind enough to fill up my box with amazing things for my new house. The items inside were so thoughtful, they will all go to good use.

Inside my box was:
- Hand knitted clothes and a tea towel; These are amazing. They are beautiful. I was very touched when I received something so personal for my new house. These will go to good use.
- A Quebec Magnet; Somehow Françoise new that I collected magnets. I don't have a fridge of my own, but when I do I have about 30 magnets that will be going up. I look forward to adding this magnet to my collection
- Quebec Water; drank this pretty much right away as I had just gotten home from the gym. Was very fresh and clear tasting (if that makes sense?)
- Organic Quebec Oats; Holy yum.
- Quebec Honey; My boyfriend loves honey on his toast. This honey is drippy and tasty.
- Salt and Peppa; Perfect for a couple who doesn't own shakers!
- Minced Garlic; My dad saw this and instantly asked if he could use some on his steak at supper. I kindly obliged. He loved it ;)
- Old Fashioned Mustard; I am a mustard fanatic. I seriously dip everything into mustard. Carrots. French Fries. You name it.
- Handwritten Recipes; Honey Orange Dressing, Carrot Soup, Savory Mustard Pie, and Quick and Easy Tofu Burgers, all of these recipes use the other ingredients sent to me. I have made the Honey Orange Dressing and had it on a salad - it was so light and crisp! I forgot to snap a picture of it.

Honor Your Health

My mantra for healthy living: Consistency and Commitment. Without either of those things I wouldn't be where I am today. This journey started out as a quest of "Skinny" and has brought me to a quest of "Health". Things such as proper portion sizes, exercise, choosing vegetables, not drinking often, indulging in a little bit of dark chocolate - those are the things that bring you health over time.

A lot of losing weight is a mental struggle against yourself. You make a poor decision, you eat the "wrong" food, and it sends you spiraling. You beat yourself up for it. Foods become "good" or "bad". You can't eat out because god forbid you eat over your calorie limit for the day. I have been there. I have experienced all of those things. I think it is part of the process of shedding who you once were and discovering who you want to be.

I have talked about this recently because I believe that honoring your health means more than just eating and exercising - it means living to the fullest, enjoying decadence, tasting dessert and savoring it. Not beating yourself up but accepting food in moderation.

This is no a place you will come to over night unfortunately. It is a gradual acceptance and transition. Be consistent with your food choices, with your healthy attitude. Be committed to yourself - because lets face it, you are the most important thing you have. Be ready for the journey. Be ready to learn. Be ready to fall along the way. But most importantly be ready to succeed.

My New Running Gadget

Up until now I have been a fairly technology-free runner. Sure I use my Ipod, but I have never worn a GPS watch or paced myself. Sometimes I wouldn't even time myself. I was more focused on the experience of running, the joy from it. The more I run (and I finally feel "back in to it" after my wisdom teeth surgery and complications) the more I get curious about my speed. Especially with my recent success, I am hoping to try and one day do a sub 2hr 1/2 and then move on to a full marathon. I think these are both relatively attainable goals. However if I am going to learn about pacing myself more I need the tools to help me do that.

Enter the Nike+ SportWatch GPS.
I researched for hours what type of watch I should buy. The Garmin led the pack for the majority of my search, followed by the Nike+, but the bulkiness of the Garmin finally got to me. Plus: the Nike+ is green. Of course I needed to buy it.

Today was the initial "test run" hehe. I enjoyed it very much! I hardly noticed the watch (it didn't feel all funny) on my wrist, and it's large screen is easy to read. It even said "Great First Run" when I finished :) Thank you GPS Watch, Thank you very much.

It does take about 2min to connect to sattelites, and it offers a Nike+ Shoe Pod that is compatible with Nike+ shoes in case the GPS cuts out, but I am not too concerned right now about that because I don't want to get all caught up in the pace-game. I just would like a rough estimate of my speed as I am going and then will work on it from there. So far, this watch seems to do all that and more.

Do you run with Gadgets? I am still in the need of a good and unbulky hydration system. Any suggestions?

WIAW - Its a Rainy Day

Good day! I have been working lots and lots, which is nice, but also throws me out of a routine. I am going to have to get used to preparing supper for 2 (I like to make Matthias something healthy and satisfying for when he is done work) even though I will be at work myself by the time he is done and home for the night.

Oh! That's right - I suppose I should give an update on the Job Sitch. I told my Remand Manager and she was really good about it. I am finishing up my orientation there and will stay on the roster for casual shifts, once I get my full license (beginning of August) we will see whether I will stay on or not. I also start my Mental Health Orientation on Monday! Nice :) The position is full time Evenings (hence the switch up of routine) but I will get used to it. I generally like the evening shift, I feel like I get lots done during the day because I am up by 8am latest. It will just be different coming home to an already sleeping Matthias. We will adjust.

Here are my delicious food choices for today:
Breakfast; Peanut Butter Cheerios that I purchased on Ebay with Almond milk and Banana
Snack After the Gym; City Roast Monkey's Lunch Mocha - 1/2 skim chocolate milk, 1/2 coffee, no whip (It has a mix of Banana and Kahlua syrup - yum)
Lunch; I don't generally like frozen meals, but I like to try them at least once, especially if they are "healthier" versions. This is the PC Blue Menu Mac and 3 Cheese with mixed in frozen peas. It was just ok.
Snack; Apple
Supper; Huge Salad with Newman's Light Olive Oil Dressing
Snack Numero 3; Cut up, almost past it's prime peach, Square of Chocolate and Carrots to munch at work

Exercise -- Feel the Difference

9. Exercise--Feel the Difference Forget militant exercise. Just get active and feel the difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie burning effect of exercise. If you focus on how you feel from working out, such as energized, it can make the difference between rolling out of bed for a brisk morning walk or hitting the snooze alarm. If when you wake up, your only goal is to lose weight, it's usually not a motivating factor in that moment of time. (source)
The one principle I feel I have mastered! I absolutely love exercise.

My love of movin' my bod' didn't start out as love. When I started losing weight of course I knew I needed to exercise. The most I had ever done in the past was dance as a teenager and this was not enough to keep me thin. I loved dance, but knew this wasn't the only type of exercise I could do to lose weight. I wasn't active in gym - I only took it because my gym teacher was cute. I didn't know anything about running, weight lifting, what I needed to do to start an exercise routine.

I have said it before - for me I needed to master the eating part before I could even think of the exercise part. It wasn't until about 7 months in that I started an exercise routine. It started out simple. I tried to do the 30 Day Shred or do 30 minutes on my Dad's elliptical 4 times a week. I had already been paying for a Gym membership since September when they had a sale on joining, but I hadn't used the membership once. I came up with excuses - it was out of the way, I didn't have my gym clothes, I didn't have enough time -- you get the idea.

Once I signed up for my first 10km run I knew things had to change. Excuses wouldn't get me across the finish line. Hard work would. It was still winter when I started running (February!) so I thought what better way to put to use my gym membership. I was already paying for it. I followed my Hal Higdon training plan on the treadmill and as the days got nicer I brought my running outside. I expanded my exercise and tried some classes at my gym. It was instant love. Working out with a group full of other women is truly motivating. It was invigorating to see other women of all shapes and ages trying to get healthy. I really believe that every little effort pays off. Once I started taking classes and running full time I knew I wanted to expand my horizons.

I will do anything that moves me, anything that I think is fun. These things include: Running, Exercise Classes, Spin (!!!), Walking, Hot Yoga, Hiking, and once in a while some work out DVD's (Jillian FTW). If you are just starting out with an exercise program start small - figure out what you love, what you hate, and what you'd like to try and then go for it! You will get stronger/faster/fitter.

Race Recap: Woody's 2012 Half Marathon!

Why Hello There!

I ran a half marathon this morning! I was slightly worried about this race and my time as getting my wisdom teeth out pretty much knocked me out of training for 3 weeks. I knew I would be able to finish the distance, but my goal of getting around 2:15 (shaving 15min off my first 1/2) was questionable.

Race Day Breakfast: Toast with Banana, 1 slice with Dark Chocolate Dreams, 1 slice with PB, Coffee on the side
Race Eats: 1 Running Ball (a variation of these), Sharkies, and a Pre-Race GU. I actually forgot the GU at home but Danielle shared one with me!

I think I'm ready? See that stupid water bottle? Yeah, it bounced, A LOT. I am on the hunt for a belt that isn't bulky that can hold just one bottle. Any suggestions?

Left the house at 6:50 to pick up Danielle :) We headed to the start, promptly used the port-o-potties, and got ready to run!

Danielle had trained with the Running Room for this half marathon. It was her first one and girlfriend totally killed it!
We started out and I knew by the km #3 that I wouldn't be able to pace with Danielle, that speedy gazelle! I slowed my pace and decided to instead focus on the beautiful scenery. This run is absolutely gorgeous. We run by the Red Deer River, over to Heritage Ranch, and through some of Red Deers Parks. Loved it.

Here is a breakdown of my km's:
1-3 - Danielle is fast, I keep up but know I won't be able to, FAACK, this water bottle is annoying, abandon water bottle
3-10 - Woah, I am at the 10th km already!?
11 - Ouch, the outside of my left foot is starting to have a dull ache (which happened to continue to the end of the run haha), eat my running ball
12 - Hello Lindsey!
14 - CRAMP. Forced to alternate walking and running a bit.
15 - I wonder what my time is? (I don't run with a watch) I only have 6km left! I can totally do this.
17 - Eat more Sharkies, drink more water (I think I may have overdone it with the water this race as I have felt unusually full all day and felt stuffed after the race)
19 - I can see the finish line area, only 2km left.
20 - Walk a bit (that darn hill is coming up)
21.3 - FINISH: 2:15:31

What a pleasant surprise! I paced myself perfectly. I didn't feel too sore. I could have probably kept going. Lovely.

Went to Cora for Brunch after, I was so full (weird) so I only ate about half of my Fruit Crunch.

Navigating the Job Market

Okay. So I just graduated. I am about 40g's in debt. I just bought a house.

I don't have a regular job.........

Stressful. No?

I was originally hired to work casual on the Maternity Unit at my hospital. I quickly realized that this was something I just did not want to do, so I resigned before my orientation started. Jobless.

I interviewed at lots of places. Red Deer Hospital Mental Health, Child/Adolescent Mental Health, Ponoka, Remand Center, Ponoka again.

I didn't get the first 3 jobs, but the interviews went well. Red Deer Mental Health and Ponoka both told me to apply for future postings, which I did.

Remand .... interview didn't go so well. There was one point at which I thought I may start crying because I felt like such a green nurse. Well lo-and-behold, I got a call back for a tour and was offered a casual position. Of course I accepted. I didn't have a job.

I got the call back for my second interview in Ponoka and interviewed on Monday. It went well.

I started at the Remand on Tuesday. I like it there. It is definitely intimidating but I think it will be a great place to gain experience. But it's casual.... and casual doesn't pay the bills. Casual is tricky. It can be great at some places that always have shifts, and awesome for people who want to pick and choose how and when they work. It is not so great for places where there are hardly any shifts (I have heard this about the Remand) and for people who NEED money (like myself).

So la-dee-da, I went about the last 2 days orientating. It is going good so far. But I found out I can't work without another RN being present (as I don't have a license, just a temporary permit) until I get my CRNE results (end of July/beginning of August). That limits my availability for shifts to weekdays... Not great for someone who needs to work if there are limited shifts already.

I got a phone call from the Red Deer Mental Health at the hospital. Offered a full time (temporary for 1 year) evenings position. SHIT.

Of course I want full time work. In mental health. At the hospital in my city. Under a great Manager. Of course.

I am one who considers everyone when I make a decision and I often feel bad putting myself first. My first reaction? Well if I work full time then I can't pick up any shifts at the Remand unless they agree to pay me over time. I am not sure if the Remand center is cool with that. I don't have a problem working on my days off, or working doubles. Hell I am young without a family. I will work whenever I can so that I can pay off my loans faster and save up for home stuff and vacations with Matthias.

I told the MH manager that I was hired casually. He said he was just leaving work and that he would think about it tonight and get back to me tomorrow about what we might be able to do. DOUBLE SHIT. Did I just fuck up getting a full time position?

So I thought about it. I feel such guilt going in to orientation tomorrow and being like "Sorry guys... I just got another job" but I also realize that I couldn't have predicted it. So I called back the MH manager and left him a message saying "I accept I accept I accept!!!!!! Please don't give the job away." Okay. Might not have been in those terms, but you get the point.

Tomorrow I must do something I hate, absolutely despise, doing. Letting someone down. I am going to be strong and tell my Remand manager that I was offered an accepted the full time position. I don't know if that means I will be let go? I don't want it to, but I also know that I need to do what is right for myself, and that is having a regular work schedule.

So now I am in a funky limbo again. I have to wait to talk to the Mental Health manager to confirm that I can still have that position. Once I do that then I have to buck up and talk to my Remand manager and hope that she will be willing to keep me casual. I wish this were easier.

Have you you ever had a situation where you felt lost in your job field? Any advise for me?

Respect Your Body

But mostly, respect your body, so you can feel better about who you are. It's hard to reject the diet mentality if you are unrealistic and overly critical about your body shape. (source)
Even when I was overweight, I always felt like I should be a thin person. I never ever felt my weight until I started trying to lose it. Has anyone else experienced this before?

When I started on my weight loss journey I needed to find love for myself. This included but was not limited to love for my body. I was very, very self conscious about my breasts (as written in this post). This is something that stems from a false rumor spread about me in 8th grade. I am still pretty sensitive about it, and I don't like to discuss it in detail. I have had trouble being in front of men without a shirt on. This is something that I am working on still.

I am now in a place where I respect my body (for the most part). I appreciate my face, my hair, my stomach and behind, my back and spine, my thighs, my cellulite, my stretch marks on my arms. They are a part of who I am, where I have been, and they will take me through the rest of my life. The way I look, the parts that make me up, do not make me any better or any less of a person. They are a piece of the 'Amie-Puzzle'. They are unique to me, and I am thankful for that.

I like to take that quote a little farther - You only have one body. You can do things to change it, dye your hair, gain weight, lose weight, get a tattoo, have plastic surgery, wear colored contact lens', you get the idea. I don't judge any one else based on their decisions on what they do to their body. Their body is unique to them, just as their experience of living in their body is unique. I think the important thing when making decisions on what we do to our body is that those decisions should be based on respect of ourselves.

Week'o'Meals Monday

Yay for buying a house!! Our possession date is set for June 29th! It will be SO nice to have our own place to come home to. I can't wait to get everything set up and build a home!

I also participated in the Only Women's Fitness Mothers Day Fun Run (5km) yesterday. It was beautiful outside. I am not sure of my time, but it was a good run. I am noticing some pain on the outside of my left foot however. I am wondering if my shoes might not have enough support (go figure!)? Has any one else ever experienced this? Any remedies before the big 21km on Sunday? Following the run my sister (who also participated!!) and I went for brunch at Cora. It was delish.

What I Ate Wednesday [11]

I DID manage to complete my long run on Monday. 19km. It was hard. I was definitely slower than I was pre-wisdom-teeth-removal. Such as life though right? I will build the speed and strength and stamina back up. I know that already. Just as I know that I will be able to finish the Woody's half marathon!! My plan is to do another 8km run on Thursday ad my final 5km run on Sunday as my Taper. I will take 3 active rest days (walking/elliptical-ing) on Thursday-Saturday, and then, on May 20th, I will run my little heart out. I am so excited to be doing a race in Red Deer. And I will be doing it with my favorite work out buddy Danielle!! Such an honor. I know she will be faster than me, but at least she can watch me cross the finish line haha ;)

Yesterday was Matthias's 25th birthday! A big one! I got up at 5:30am to make him French Toast and Grilled Banana for Breakfast and then I set to work baking this baby: Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with a Banana CoolWhip Topping. I didn't really follow a recipe. I just knew the basic Cheesecake ingredients and subbed low fat plain yogurt for sour cream. Twas ahhhhmayzing. I could like on food that decadent! Haha

Another exciting thing? Matthias and I put an offer in on our Perfect Home  tonight! Will update when we know more. OH. And I got a job at the Remand Center! YAHOO!!! :) Awesome day.

Anxiety, loneliness, boredom, anger are emotions we all experience throughout life. Each has its own trigger, and each has its own appeasement. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you into a food hangover. But food won't solve the problem. If anything, eating for an emotional hunger will only make you feel worse in the long run. You'll ultimately have to deal with the source of the emotion, as well as the discomfort of overeating. I used to eat my feelings. I used to go to McDonalds, buy a Big Mac, Cheeseburger, Large Fries, and McChicken Sauce (and sometimes a McChicken Burger) and eat it all. I would do this after a fight with my mother, after feeling like a failure from stepping on the scale, or simply because I was bored and wanted something to do.

Boredom was a huge barrier to my weight loss. I would eat until I was stuffed beyond belief, where it hurt to just move from the couch to the bed and do absolutely. nothing. at. all. Looking back on the quality of life I had, I feel sad that I let myself get to that point. Many hours were spent wasted in front of the TV mindlessly watching shows I didn't even like. Many days passed by with no physical activity. I let myself get there. There is no one to blame but myself.

I have a lot of family issues. Problems with my mom. An absent biological father. I could go on, but why bother? I spent years blaming my eating on these things. It was pointless. The problem lied within myself. One of the greatest pieces of advice I learned is "You can't change the actions of those around you, but you can chose how to handle it and how to respond." I truly live my life by that statement now. I can't change my mothers drinking, I can't change the fact that it drove my father to not wanting to have a relationship with me. I can change how my future will turn out. I can focus on healthy living, having a career, putting time and effort into the relationships that matter to me. These things will make me a happier person. These things will bring me a sense of fulfillment that Big Mac's never could.

Ice cream. FO SHO.

Pasta or Pizza?
I would pick pasta... but the nutrition lover in me chooses pizza because I can amp it up with tons of veggies. I can do this with pasta too... but I love 2 things with my pasta: creamy sauce and cheese.
Chocolate bars or Chocolates?

Bananas. I could live on banana's.
Salad or Soup?
I feel the same as Lindsey on this one - Salad in the summer, soup in the winter.
Cauliflower or Broccoli?
I enjoy both equally :)
Onion Rings or Fries?
Onion Rings - but I love sweet tater fries.

Poached or Fried or Scrambled Eggs?
Depends on how I am eating them! I enjoy fried egg sammies, poached eggs benny, and hard boiled as a snack. Ohhh and don't even get me started on Deviled Eggs.

Pancakes or Waffles?
Waffles :) Love the craters. I just bought a waffle maker from Walmart and have been looooving it.
Baked Potato or Mashed Potatoes?
I mash my baked potato haha so that means mashed :)
Oatmeal or Cereal?
I think it depends. I go through breakfast spurts. Some days I love oatmeal, some days cereal, some days overnight oats, some days pancakes, some days waffles, some days smoothies, Wednesday's scones :) I try to mix it up

What I Ate Wednesday [10]

FINALLY feeling better and back to eating real [delicious!] food.
Breakfast; As per 'Scone and a Coffee Wednesday' I had a White Chocolate Cranberry Scone and a 1/2 Coffee Orange Slice Mocha with no Whip
Pre-Yoga Fuel; Banana and PB
Lunch; I forgot to take a picture at the start :( It was a Thin-Style Pita with 1tbsp Tzatziki, 1 Small slice Marble Cheese, 2 Slices Yves Lunch 'Meat', Cucumber, Avocado and Mushroom, and a Side Salad (with mixed veggies like Pepper, Black Beans, Onion, ext...) with THIS dressing (yum!). I had a Strawberry for 'dessert'
Snack; Extra Small Tim Horton's Regular and 1 Square Lindt Dark Chocolate
Supper; Roasted Maple Brussel Sprouts and Eggs Benedict with Mock-Hollandaise (made with dijon mustard and plain yogurt), and Sauteed Asparagus and Mushrooms
Evening Snackage; Vanilla Pudding Cup with PB2 and a sprinkle'o'chips

6. Discover the Satisfaction Factor The Japanese have the wisdom to promote pleasure as one of their goals of healthy living. In our fury to be thin and healthy, we often overlook one of the most basic gifts of existence--the pleasure and satisfaction that can be found in the eating experience. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting and conducive, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. I feel as though I have really come to a place where I can feel satisfied with my food choices and balance myself out at the end of each day without scrutinizing what I have eaten.

I try to sit down for all of my meals (whether it be by myself or with family) with minimal distraction. I turn off the TV, put down my magazine or book, and close the lap top so that I can give my full undivided attention to my food. I find that the extra bit of focus really helps to ensure that I am getting everything out of each meal that I can.

This was hard over the last week when I couldn't eat "real food". I could eat variations of food such as blended up beans, and pureed soups, but it wasn't the same because I was missing out on the textural aspect of enjoying food.

To me, food is really about all 5 senses. You need to see a visually appealing meal, smell the scent of decadent food, hear the food as its being prepared (whether it be stirring in a pan, plating something out of the oven ext...) and as you are eating it (chewing with your mouth closed of course! But there is definitely something inviting about the crunch of taking a bite out of an apple as opposed to eating a carton of apple sauce), feel the texture of the food in your mouth as you chew it and taste the combinations of different bites. Every meal should be an experience of these things.

I encourage you all to give it a try! Next time you sit down for a meal make note of your senses and how they are reacting to the food. Happy eating!
